ChatGPT Ads Have Arrived.

By Tom Reidy

ChatGPT Ads Have Arrived.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT Ads use contextual advertising, not demographics.
  • Contextual relevance beats interruptive remarketing.
  • Ads are separate from content & protect user privacy.
  • Early adoption offers competitive learning advantages.
  • Prepare for a new era in AI-driven marketing.

For the past two decades, digital marketing has largely been shaped by a handful of platforms. Google changed how we searched. Facebook changed how we discovered. TikTok changed how we consumed content.

Now another major player has entered the conversation.

OpenAI has officially expanded its ChatGPT advertising platform with a beta self-serve Ads Manager, giving businesses a new way to reach customers inside one of the world's fastest-growing AI products. As someone who has spent years helping businesses navigate new digital platforms, I couldn't resist jumping in.

At TAG, we're already actively testing it.

This Isn't Just Another Ad Platform

What excites me most isn't simply that ChatGPT now has advertising.

It's how it works.

Unlike traditional social media advertising, which often relies on demographics, interests, or behavioural tracking, ChatGPT introduces something marketers have been talking about for years but rarely experienced at this level: contextual advertising.

The ad appears because of what someone is trying to achieve right now.

If someone is researching accounting software, planning a holiday, comparing vehicles, or looking for marketing advice, they're demonstrating genuine intent through a conversation rather than simply fitting into an audience segment.

That's a fascinating shift.

Context Beats Interruption

For years we've chased people around the internet with remarketing ads.

You looked at a pair of shoes once?

Congratulations. You'll now see those shoes for the next three weeks.

Conversational AI changes that dynamic.

Instead of interrupting someone's day, the opportunity is to become relevant within the conversation they're already having.

That's a much more useful place for advertising to live.

OpenAI has also been very clear that ads are kept separate from ChatGPT's answers, are clearly labelled, and advertisers don't receive users' conversations or personal chat data. The focus is on relevance while maintaining trust.

The Questions I'm Testing

Like any new platform, there are far more questions than answers.

Over the coming months I'll be exploring things like:

  • Which industries perform best?
  • How does conversational intent compare with Google Search intent?
  • What creative actually works?
  • Which prompts trigger commercial opportunities?
  • How should brands structure landing pages for AI-driven visitors?
  • How do we measure success alongside Meta and Google campaigns?

This is exactly the sort of experimentation that has always excited me.

A New Chapter for Marketing

Every major advertising platform has felt uncertain in its early days.

Google AdWords.
Facebook Ads.
Instagram.
TikTok.

Most marketers watched from the sidelines.

The ones willing to experiment early learned the platform while everyone else debated whether it would last.

I suspect ChatGPT Ads will be remembered as another one of those moments.

Will it replace Google?

Probably not.

Will it replace Meta?

Not anytime soon.

But I do believe conversational AI is creating an entirely new customer journey—one where people ask questions instead of typing keywords, and where recommendations happen naturally inside an ongoing conversation.

That's a different mindset for marketers.

We'll Be Sharing What We Learn

We're treating this like every new platform we've adopted at TAG.

Test.

Measure.

Learn.

Repeat.

Some ideas will fail.

Some campaigns will surprise us.

But that's how innovation works.

It's an exciting time to be in marketing, and I can't wait to see where conversational advertising goes from here.

If you're curious about ChatGPT Ads or wondering whether your business should be experimenting with this new channel, I'd love to compare notes.

Now I'm off to tinker with the API and see how far I can push it!
